Review: There is nothing more heartbreaking than children who are sick and dying. The story will take you on the journey of seventeen-year-old Hazel who is diagnosed with Thyroid cancer. She needs to carry an oxygen tank with her to be able to breathe. Against her will, she joins a cancer support group. There she meets Gus (Augustus), and they fall in Love. Gus lost his leg to bone cancer and is in remission. When they two recommend books to each other, Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction, written by Peter van Houten, a Dutch writer residing in Amsterdam. When Gus tracks down van Houten his assistant, they start emailing. Van Houten's assistant let Gus know that the author only answers questions in person. Gus surprises Hazel with tickets to Amsterdam. Van Houten isn't the person they expected (to be honest, he was a full-blown D**K). If the meeting with van Houten wasn't bad enough, Gus shares some heartbreaking news with Hazel. Can the girl not get any break in this book!! My heart was with Hazel and Gus all the time. The only issue I had was that at times they seemed too wise for their age. It would have probably worked better if they were in their early twenties. It makes you happy and sad, that Hazel and Gus experienced falling in love and what it feels like to support each other. I liked the book but hated the ending (which I will not spoil), although it was somehow beautiful at the same time.
